A cop is killed on Interstate 595. The Feb. 19 Local section profiles another fatal crash. In both cases, the at-fault driver had a suspended license. Notice that both drivers would have had a valid license had they paid the fine. Paying a fine has nothing to do with mistake-free driving.
The Florida Department of Motor Vehicles publishes data in the article telling us 11,329 crashes in 2004 were caused by drivers without a license. Tell them to supply you the number wrecking with them.
Isn't this the same department that presides over the driver's license farce itself? One can have never had an accident, but forget to pay a fine and end up with a license suspension. Another driver has multiple accidents, no points and no suspension. Many get DUIs and points dismissed by attorneys. Twenty-five percent of drivers have a suspended license anyway. How, you asked? The state requires auto insurance. A lapsed policy is the same as an unpaid fine, a violation that requires a suspension. Would you like to stop 100 cars on the street and check for that in-force policy?
