Insurers selling auto coverage in the state had requested a 9.4 rate increase for 2005, but Insurance Commissioner Jim Long instead ordered the reduction. Long said the cuts will save ratepayers nearly $404 million, although many drivers already get discounts and won't see much change.
The Triangle's CBS affiliate announced plans to show and sell hits such as "CSI" and "Survivor" online, but only to viewers in its over-the-air territory.
The catch is that CBS hasn't approved the plan, and the network is promoting online programming on its own Web site. But WRAL's top executive, Jim Goodmon, is one of the nation's most powerful independent broadcasters and will carry that clout into negotiations with CBS.
