NEW YORK · Many Americans, including those with health insurance, struggle to pay for prescription drugs each year. It's no surprise -- it seems that prescription drug costs are soaring.
The good news is that there are literally hundreds of public and private drug assistance programs in existence and many of them cater to individuals who earn less than 200 percent of the federal poverty-level income ($19,000 for individuals or $31,000 for a family of three). But it's a double-edged sword -- the glut of offerings can be difficult to navigate and many people don't even know what programs they're eligible for.
Enter the Partnership for Prescription Assistance, a free service that compiles information on 475 corporate, nonprofit and government programs that help people pay for their medicine. Created by the pharmaceutical industry itself, along with doctors, patient advocates and community groups, PPA hopes to help those who fall through the cracks (and discourage price controls in the process). PPA is especially useful for individuals who earn too much to qualify for government assistance.
